Questions

Discover your potential with Allez Fencing Club. Explore our programs designed to challenge, inspire, and support every step of your fencing journey. Here are a few commonly asked questions about fencing.

What’s the right age to start fencing, and can you be too old to fence?
Fencing can start when kids are ready to follow directions and move safely in a group. We typically recommend age 7 or 8, but everyone is different!

As far as too old, it’s never too late to start fencing! Teens and adults often take up fencing for fitness, mental challenge, or competition. At Allez, we group classes by both age and experience level to make sure everyone trains in the right environment.
What are the different types of fencing weapons, and why does the club focus on épée?
There are three weapons in fencing: foil, épée, and sabre. Each has different rules, target areas, and styles.
         * Foil is light and emphasizes precision and right-of-way rules.
         * Sabre is fast and aggressive, with slashing movements and upper-body targets.
         * Épée allows full-body target and rewards strategic timing and patience.

Allez Fencing specializes in épée because it’s accessible to all ages, encourages strong tactical development, and is the most common weapon at higher levels of competition in the U.S.
Is fencing safe?
Yes! Fencing is one of the safest sports when practiced with proper equipment and supervision. The gear is designed to protect every part of the body, and injuries are rare compared to many team or contact sports. We focus on technique, control, and safety from the very first lesson.
Do you need to be athletic or have experience to start?
Not at all. You don’t need any prior athletic background to begin fencing. Fencing builds strength, coordination, focus, and confidence over time. Beginners are welcome at any age or fitness level. Our coaches are experienced in helping new fencers learn the fundamentals in a supportive environment.
What do I wear to class?
Come to class wearing athletic clothes (like a t-shirt and athletic pants or leggings) and clean sneakers with good grip. We provide the fencing gear you’ll need to get started. As you progress, we’ll guide you on how and when to invest in your own equipment.
Do I have to compete if I fence?
Nope! Many people fence just for the fun, exercise, and mental challenge. While we encourage competition as a great way to grow and apply your skills, it’s always optional. We support both recreational and competitive fencers at all levels.
